Fairmount Park is my home track. Nine miles from downtown St. Louis in Collinsville, Illinois โ€” it's the only thoroughbred track outside the Chicago metro area in the state, and for my money one of the most underrated betting venues in the Midwest. The 2026 meet is shaping up to be the most exciting in years, and if you're planning to play the races this summer, you need to read this before you bet a dollar.

I got my hands on the official 2026 Condition Book straight from the Fairmount racing office. This is the document that trainers, owners and racing secretaries use to plan their entire season. Most bettors never see it. You're about to get a serious edge.

The Meet at a Glance

The 101st Racing Season runs April 14 through October 27, 2026 โ€” 57 racing days on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. First post is 1:30 PM with races going off every 25-30 minutes through an 8-race card.

Race 1 1:30 PM
Race 2 1:55 PM
Race 3 2:20 PM
Race 4 2:45 PM
Race 5 3:10 PM
Race 6 3:35 PM
Race 7 4:00 PM
Race 8 4:25 PM

The Biggest Story: Purses Are Up 20%

This is not a minor footnote. Director of Racing David Frizzell specifically highlighted an approximate 20% increase in purses for 2026, and states "this is just the beginning." Higher purses attract better horses, better horses mean more competitive fields, and more competitive fields mean bigger overlays when you find the right angle.

The purse structure ranges from $8,000 at the very bottom of the claiming ranks all the way up to $250,000 for the St. Louis Derby. Here's the claiming ladder:

Claiming LevelBase PurseBonusTotal
$4,000 (Beaten)$9,600$2,000$11,600
$5,000 (Open)$11,000$2,000$13,000
$6,250 (Open)$13,000$2,000$15,000
$10,000 (Open)$15,000$2,500$17,500
$15,000 (Open)$19,000$3,000$22,000
$25,000 (Open)$25,000$3,000$28,000
๐Ÿ‡ Bettor's Tip The bonus kicks in whenever 8 or more horses arrive in the paddock. Trainers are financially incentivized to fill races โ€” expect competitive field sizes all meet long.

The New Rail: A Major Early Meet Factor

The condition book confirms construction on a brand new rail completing in January 2026. Most casual bettors will completely ignore this โ€” and that's exactly why it's an edge.

A new rail changes everything about track bias in the early weeks of a meet. In the first 3-4 race cards, pay close attention to where winners are coming from โ€” rail, middle, or outside. Track bias at a newly configured surface can be enormous, and if you identify it before the public does, you can cash tickets all day long.

๐Ÿ‡ Bettor's Tip Watch the first two or three race cards closely before betting heavy. Let the track tell you what it wants to do. Early meet track bias is the single biggest edge available at any track.

Understanding the Class Ladder

The class ladder at Fairmount 2026 from bottom to top: $4,000 Claiming โ†’ $5,000 โ†’ $6,250 โ†’ $10,000 โ†’ $15,000 โ†’ $25,000 โ†’ Starter Allowance โ†’ Allowance/Optional Claiming โ†’ Stakes. Every time a horse moves up or down this ladder it tells you something critical.

Class Drops โ€” Your Best Friend

A horse dropping from $10,000 claiming to $5,000 claiming is a significant drop. That trainer is trying to win. If the horse has recent form and a legitimate excuse for a bad last race, this is the angle to play. The public often doesn't respect class drops enough at smaller tracks.

Starter Allowances โ€” Hidden Gems

A horse that has previously started for a claiming price of $5,000 or less qualifies for a $15,000โ€“$20,000 purse Starter Allowance. These races often contain horses that have improved beyond their old claiming tag and are now running for real money without being claimed. Huge betting opportunities here โ€” watch for improving young horses in these spots.

The Illinois Bred Bonus: The Most Overlooked Angle at Fairmount

This is what separates the sharp Fairmount bettors from the tourists. The Illinois Owner's Award (IOA) program adds massive real-money bonuses on top of listed purses:

Illinois Bred Bonus Program

๐Ÿ† Illinois Conceived & Foaled (ICF): Owner receives an additional 60% of earnings on top of the purse

๐Ÿ† Illinois Foaled (IF): Owner receives an additional 40% of earnings

A horse winning a $22,000 listed purse as an ICF horse actually earns the owner closer to $35,000 when the state bonus is factored in. Trainers run these horses to WIN.

When you see (IL) or (ICF) next to a race condition or a horse in the program, those connections are playing for significantly more money than the tote board suggests. In races where an ICF horse is lightly raced, well-conditioned, and at a reasonable price โ€” bet it.

The Crown Jewel: The St. Louis Derby

St. Louis Derby โ€” August 29, 2026

๐Ÿ’ฐ $250,000 Guaranteed โ€” Sponsored by FanDuel Sportsbook

๐Ÿ‡ One Mile and One Sixteenth โ€” For Three Year Olds

๐Ÿ† Winner: $150,000 | 2nd: $50,000 | 3rd: $25,000 | 4th: $10,000

๐Ÿ“‹ Nominations close August 14, 2026

This is the biggest race on the Fairmount calendar and one of the most significant stakes races in the Midwest for three-year-olds. Limited to 12 starters with preference going to graded stakes winners.

Watch which trainers nominate from the moment nominations open in early August โ€” that tells you everything about which horses are being pointed here all summer. A horse that ships in from Churchill Downs or Oaklawn specifically for this race deserves maximum respect. Mark August 29 on your calendar right now.

The Iron Horse Distance Series: A Summer-Long Opportunity

This is one of the most unique betting opportunities on the Fairmount calendar and most casual bettors completely sleep on it. Seven races across the summer for horses that have started for $5,000 claiming or less โ€” with distances growing progressively longer:

RaceDateDistancePurse
#1June 231 Mile & 1/16$16,000
#2July 141 Mile & 1/8$18,000
#3August 41 Mile & 1/4$20,000
#4August 251 Mile & 1/4$22,000
#5September 151 Mile & 5/8$24,000
#6October 61 Mile & 3/4$26,000
FINALOctober 232 Miles$30,000

Points are awarded each race โ€” 5 for a win, 4 for place, 3 for show, 1 point just for finishing. There's also a $10,000 Trainer Bonus for the trainer with the most starters across the series.

๐Ÿ‡ Bettor's Tip Identify the 2-3 horses built for distance early in the series and follow them all summer. A horse that wins races 1 and 2 is your early points leader โ€” but the price may be better in the middle races before everyone figures it out. The two-mile final is one of the most unusual and fun betting races in Illinois.

Betting Strategy & Takeout Rates

Know what the track is taking before you bet. Fairmount's takeout rates for 2026:

Bet TypeTakeout
Win / Place / Show17%
Exacta / Daily Double20.5%
Trifecta / Pick 3 / Superfecta25%

The win pool at 17% takeout is your best value bet at Fairmount. Exotic bets eat into your bankroll faster. If you're confident in a horse, a straight win bet gives you the best return on your investment. Save the exotics for races where you have strong top-3 opinions.

My 2026 Fairmount Betting Plan

Early meet (April-May): Watch more than I bet. Let the track reveal its bias after the new rail installation. Identify which jockeys are in the best form early โ€” the hot rider at Fairmount is worth following all meet long.

Mid-meet (June-July): Get aggressive. Horses have established form at the track, patterns are clear, and the Iron Horse series is underway. Class drops and trainer patterns become very readable.

Late meet (August-October): The St. Louis Derby on August 29 is the biggest betting day of the year. Then follow the Iron Horse series to its conclusion on October 23.

I'll be posting my Fairmount picks right here on WonWingWonder every race day starting April 14. Follow along and let's cash some tickets together. See you at the windows.
